In this episode we talk with Karen Thomson, founder of The Sugar Free Revolution and CrossFit Health Ambassador. We discuss sugar addiction and its role in obesity and chronic disease as well as its lack of acknowledgement in the medical community. We also discuss Karen’s self-experimentation with various diets including low carbohydrate, keto, and carnivore. Karen shares her experience with continuous glucose monitoring and the surprising effects of both food and non-food items on her health. We also dive into the role of psychology in nutrition and addiction counseling and how practitioners can better counsel their patients.

In this episode we talk with Logan Aldridge and Alec Zirkenbach, adaptive athletes and founders of the Adaptive Training Academy (ATA). We discuss the importance of fitness for people with disabilities and how the ATA’s training methodology helps adaptive athletes better prepare themselves for life and sport. We talk about barriers to entry, and other challenges adaptive athletes face in the fitness community and what can be done to build confidence and further independence in this population. We also discuss the evolution of ATA’s course from live seminar to online certification and how healthcare professionals can access the content to further their knowledge. Alec also shares his experience as Mat Fraser’s judge for the 2020 CrossFit Games.

Ronald Perez of NYPD CrossFit, and Syn Martinez, founder of Afro Brutality Sports about their initiative to unite the local communities and the Police through fitness. NYPD CrossFit and AfroBrutality Sports have been working together to bring CrossFit events to communities considered “fitness deserts” with limited access to the sport. These mobile events serve as health clinics, improving health and fitness, as well as increasing dialogue between the community and police. We discuss the role of structured group exercise and “sweat equity” in youth development. We also discuss the role of CrossFit in mental health and suicide prevention, and diversity within the sport.
